When you ask people what they’d like to do more of if they had the time and/or money, they often respond with; “travel!”, “get out of the country”, “see the sights” etc. And I can tell you that my response is pretty much the same. Yes, in my last post I stated that I had only made one New Year’s Resolution (which is true), but part of my medium & long term goals involve me making time to do much more traveling.
Small steps.
Clearly, the best place to start is in your own backyard. Now, here in Perth, we have a LOT of backyard to explore, so I’m being super creative by extending that definition to include the Eastern States. More specifically, Victoria and New South Wales. Friends were consulted, plans were made, tickets & accommodation booked, so I’m happy to announce the official dates of travel are as follows:
Friday, 3rd October – Perth to Melbourne
Wednesday, 8th October – Melbourne to Sydney
Sunday, 12th October – Sydney to Perth
I have both real life and online friends in those cities, and will endeavour to catch up with as many as I can fit in between shopping, eating, shopping, drinking, shopping, sleeping and shopping. So what I’m asking of you is suggestions for things to do whilst I’m there. Tickets have been booked to see Cirque de Soleil’s Drallion on the Thursday when in Sydney, and despite the number of times Cirque has toured through Australia, it’s embarrassing for me to admit I’ve never once seen a show!
Aside from that, what else can you recommend I see or do? Any insider information is very welcome, and if you’d like to meetup for a drink and a chat, please let me know in the comments, or email me: luweez [at] luweez [dot] net

Everything takes small steps =) I miss Melbourne, I need to visit that place next year.
this means you'll be required to attend the perth bloggers meetup every month.its the law.
Top things to do in Melbourne include coffee at Peligrinis, and pizza on Lygon St! Not sure if I'll manage to fit either of these in on my trip here this week however!
All I saw of both Sydney and Brisbane was the airport! I hope you have a fantastic trip and I'm so excited to know you're spreading your wings. I agree, many of us ache to travel.I was thrilled to travel to California last May for a conference. It was a trip that created a LOT of firsts, my first plane flight, my first out of W.A., my first out of AU, etc. Now I'm committed to going the that conference in New York next year. Save, save, save.Tillee (you met her at Pirate PTUB – my sister) is going on a P&O Cruise in October. She's so excited about it.I hope you'll share with us all the fun things you do while you're away. We'll explore Melbourne and Sydney vicariously through you until we can experience it ourselves.
Meanwhile, school holidays have me vowing to do a short explore of South W.A. Any must see sights you recommend?
Orly? Do you abide by said law? Thought not!
Thanks, Fi! I'll slot them into my schedule as I dearly love both caffeine and pizza
California & New York? Sounds much better than Melbourne & Sydney (no offense to their residents!). But yes, I will keep you updated on my travel mini-adventures for sure
If you've never been down south, you MUST visit at least a few wineries & Olio Bello olive oil place! And the Bootleg Brewery is also worth a look in
I second the motion for food on Lygon Street (don't limit yourself to Pizza!) Wicked is also playing in Melbourne if you like the musical kind of thing. Wandering around Queen Victoria Market is lots of fun (and plenty of food abounds). Head down to South Bank at night when they fire up the big, err, “fire beacons” (not exactly sure what their real name is) and while you're there, stop in at the casino for a quick flutter!
Rialto Observation Deck is good – but if you're cheap (like me), the lavatories on the 3th floor of the Sofitel Hotel on Collins Street are a free alternative!
Thanks for the tip. I always need to pee, so the lavatories might be the way to go
Thanks, Tim! Will see if I have time for Wicked, and will check out the markets for sure. Someone said there are 24hr bowling alleys at the casino, so I might try and combine those last suggestions all together

The top thing to do in Melbourne is visiting Queen Victoria Market. It is the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere and center for trade and commerce, as well as a popular venue for visitors.
